Ecofeminism is a school of thought, academic domain, and ongoing social movement of the past half century that developed out of anarcha-feminism and the abolition of all forms of domination, while focusing on the oppressive nature of humanity’s relationship to the natural world.

The key principles of ecofeminism are (1) Recognizing the connections between the oppression and exploitation of nature and women, (2) an ecological systems perspective of feminist theory, and (3) inclusion of feminist perspectives in shaping prefigurative solutions for addressing issues of human-driven climate change and environment.

Françoise d’Eaubonne, coined the term ecofeminism in her book Le Féminisme ou la Mort (Feminism or Death, 1974), in which she relates the oppression and domination of all marginalized groups — women, people of color, children, the poor to the oppression and domination of nature, animals, land, water, air, etc., making the argument that oppression, domination, exploitation, and colonization from the Western patriarchal society has directly caused irreversible environmental damage.

Intersectionality is a term of art initially used within the Black Feminist academic community, describing the socio-ecological model (SEM) for the specific analytical understanding of how groups’ and individuals’ socio-political identities result in unique combinations of discrimination and privilege. A few examples of these factors include gender, caste, sex, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, disability, height, age, weight and physical appearance.

It was introduced to the field of legal studies by Black Feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, professor of law at Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles, and is also widely known for introducing the term “critical race theory.”
